Chapter Fifteen

When Cici drops me off before heading to the bar, it’s just after 5:00. The event doesn’t start until 6:00, but I wanted to come a little early and help. I am also kind of hoping that I will be able to check in on Nathan after our talk this morning.

I walk in the side entrance and head straight for the conference room. There’s a few decorations in the hall, along with a makeshift coat room. I think usually it's just a broom closet, but tonight it has coat racks lining the walls. I find a hanger and put my coat in the back before heading in through the doors to where the main event will be hosted.

The room is beautiful. The table clothes are a deep navy blue with cream-colored plates set at each table. Balloons are set as the centerpieces tied down at each table with a small bouquet of silk flowers. The stage is lined with balloons and silk ribbons that flow down at each corner. It is the perfect picture of elegance.

“Catherine! Hey!” Amber comes up to me, looping her arms around my shoulders and hugging me for a brief moment. “Wow! You look stunning!” She holds me at arm’s length and smiles.

I can feel myself blush a little at the compliment. “You look amazing, too. that dress definitely does not look like a prom dress.”

She's wearing a stunning royal blue tea length lace dress. It hugs her petite frame, accentuating the shape of her body. Her hair is swept back and tied in a low bun at the base of her head, and her bold eyeliner makes her look like she should be on the cover of a makeup magazine or something.

I peer around the room, looking to see who else is here, but all I see is the catering staff getting things set up.

“Nathan is upstairs in his office getting changed. I don’t think he went home today. I’m sure he will be back any minute.” She turns to survey the room, and I adjust my dress. “So, what was going on in Nathan’s office this morning?” She gives me a pointed look.

“Oh, we had dinner last night. I was just checking to make sure he was okay, things were cut a little short.”

“Dinner?” She gives me a funny look and raises her eyebrows.

“Yeah, after setting up we just went to the diner on campus for a bit.”

“Was it dinner? Or, was it DINNER?” She smirks at me, and I roll my eyes.

“I honestly don’t know. Maybe it was something, maybe it wasn’t.” I can’t help but smile a little, thinking about how easy conversation came once we got over the initial awkwardness of being alone together.

“So are you guys a thing now? Are you going to have dinner again?”

I honestly hope we have dinner again, but I shrug, trying not to give too much away. I don’t want to get my hopes up prematurely, or talk about it and jynx myself. After our shared moment in his office this morning I can’t help but wonder what exactly will come of us.
